Player rankings Welcome to Player Rankings – the latest addition to the MSPL Website. This new ranking system has been designed with two things in mind.
Player Rankings uses a points system designed to take into account various elements of an individual’s performance over multiple seasons. This includes their league results, their win ratio (%), and the division that they play in. Last seasons player records have been captured and a formula has been applied to them giving each player a season total. This list has been frozen as the 2008/09 season total. We have also captured the same for 2007/08 and 2006/07 seasons meaning we now have captured three seasons worth of data. From these three seasons of data, all players have an official ranking in the MSPL. Next seasons results will have the same formula applied to them and if we can get the necessary IT in place, this will occur automatically on a weekly basis. These newly earned points are then added to the previous two season’s totals to provide a provisional ranking for the following season. This would mean that a player’s provisional ranking will change every week as the results come in and players can witness the effect a result has had on their provisional ranking position. However if we are unable to automate the process, these records will be updated annually during the close season. As from the close of the 2009/10 season (season 4), points earned during season 1 (2006/07) will drop from the records. This keeps the rankings based on a three year loop/cycle of records to gauge all players form over a suitable time period. The maths. Points are awarded as follows:
The points allocated have tried to take into account the level of difficulty in obtaining a result in each division. Obviously a player winning a match in Division 2 will have beaten a (theoretically) better player than a player winning in Division 4. Therefore, more points are awarded. It is also appreciated that the difference in player’s abilities and the general standard of pool widens the further up the divisions you go. The point’s allocation has been designed to try to reflect this difference. These points earned are then inserted within the formula below to calculate a player’s ranking points: Points + Bonus Points (points x % win ratio)/10 Bonus points are awarded to reflect a players win ratio and to ensure a player is not penalized (and also not rewarded), by not playing. This will enable the rankings to reflect differences in a player’s success rate as well as the number of games/frames won. We hope you find these rankings published both useful and entertaining.
